These drawings show some of the equipment that farmers use to <I>till</I> (work) the soil and to plant crops. Plows are used for <I>primary tillage</I>--the original turning over of the soil each year. Harrows further break up plowed soil to prepare it for planting. Harrows may also be used for light primary tillage. Planting machines, called <I>planters</I> and <I>seed drills,</I> plant seeds in rows. Cultivators till the soil between the rows and so control weeds that appear while a crop is growing.
